Electronic Publishing Students Attend Prestigious 'Annual Lecture' in Stationers' Hall |

EP Master's students have been invited to attend the Stationer's Annual Lecture, 2008. This year's lecture is given by Gail Rebuck CBE, Chairman and Chief Executive of Random House and is entitled "New Chapter or Last Page: Publishing Books in a Digital Age". It is a rare opportunity to hear from a senior publisher in the elegant surroundings of Stationers' Hall. The Educational Charity of the Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company provide a prestigous annual bursary worth 6,000 to support a student studying on the EP course. to create interactive and innovative news features. The students, all on City's MSc Electronic Publishing, have created their own features for Yoosk.com on subjects such as the proposal for a third runway for Stansted Airport, the role of journalists in the Madeleine McCann story and the inclusion of female boxing in the 2012 London Olympics. | Former EP student Eloise Grey
has recently launched an online fashion retailer, www.eloisegrey.com.
The site sells "fine ethical clothing, made in the United Kingdom with Isle of Mull tweed". Eloise, whose career has included executive positions with AOL, is also writing a blog about her new venture. |

AHRC Annual Report celebrates EP graduate's success |

| In a case study
of EP graduate Emily Conradi in the AHRC Annual Report, she credits the
course as being instrumental in enabling her to secure her first job as
a Freelance Multi-media production Assistant with Pearson Education.
Emily was funded for her MSc in Electronic Publishing by the AHRC's Professional Preparation Master’s Scheme during 2005-6. “One of the greatest things this course has to offer is such strong ties to the web industry; students undertake both a work experience placement and a summer project working with a client,” explains Emily. | Just days after handing in his Master's project for Druk White Lotus School Rik Williams (EP 2005-6) was being interviewed for a position as a Web Services Developer in the web team at City University. Rik was offered the job and will join Dan Jackson (EP 2000-1) in February 2007 as part of the small team responsible for City's external and internal websites. During his master's study, Rik was also the recipient of the Educational Charity of the Stationers' and Newspaper Makers' Company annual bursary award. | ||||||

| A recent EP graduate (2005-6) is having a paper based on his Master's thesis published in a top academic journal. Jack Herbert's work on the business models of online newspapers is to appear in the June 2007 edition of Journalism Practice, an international peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor and Francis. The editor said that paper offered "exemplar features of the sort of piece for which I hope Journalism Practice might provide a forum for discussion". | ![]() |

EP students work with BBC on 'digital lifestyles' project |

Students on the MA in Electronic Publishing have been working with the BBC News website, researching and producing multimedia story packages on 'digital lifestyles'. An introductory talk by key staff at the BBC - including site editor Steve Herrman - launched the project. Subsequently the BBC's technology editor helped guide the students' work which included articles on: blogging, podcasting, mmorpgs, and the social networking sites Myspace.com and Cyworld. | Electronic Publishing students flew to Paris in February to produce a news website covering the Salon International de l'Agriculture in Paris. The Salon is a huge event in France, with nearly 1 million visitors and saturation coverage on French TV and radio. The City team - funded by the French Government - provide the English language news coverage for the duration of the nine-day event. Neil Thurman, who set-up this scheme with the French Ministry of Agriculture four years ago, said "this annual event provides a fantastic opportunity for our EP students to work on a live news publication and collaborate with an international team." | EP students

| Neil Thurman, Senior lecturer in Electronic Publishing, attended the 7th International Symposium on Online Journalism this April, where his paper on Citizen Journalism was voted 'best paper'. The event - held at the University of Texas, Austin - was attended by delegates including: the Editor-in-Chief of The New York Times on the Web, and the Executive Editors of both the WashingtonPost.com and the HoustonChronicle.com. |

EP students hit new heights in web design |

Students on the Master's in Electronic Publishing were commissioned to design and build a new website for an award-winning community school in the Himalayas. The project was managed by senior lecturer Neil Thurman, who wanted to make EP students' expertise available to charities, in this case the Drukpa Trust. The Druk White Lotus School's ethos is to maintain the community's rich cultural traditions, based on Tibetan Buddhism, while equipping their children for contemporary life.
