How to apply

All applications must be made on the Application for Research Degree Course Form (Word document).


You must submit the following with your application:

  • Two copies of the completed application form containing an outline of your proposed research (see below for guidance on writing the research proposal)
  • Proof of academic qualifications
  • Proof of English language proficiency where appropriate
  • Two confidential references one of which must be academic (see below for instructions on obtaining references)

  • Please note that we cannot process applications until we have received all the materials above.


    References: Applicants must send a reference request letter to each of the referees named on their application. Please note that one of the references should be from the institution where the applicant obtained their degree. Each reference must be placed in an envelope which should be sealed, signed across the seal and the signature covered with clear tape by the referee to ensure confidentiality. The envelope should be returned to the applicant who should enclose it with their application.

    Deadlines for applying and start dates

    There are no deadlines for applying for unfunded PhD study but you are advised to submit your application at least 6 weeks before your proposed start date as applications can take a number of weeks to process. There are two possible start dates each year - 1 October and 1 February.

    There are usually deadlines attached to applying for any studentships that are advertised from time to time. Details will be included in the studentship advertisement.

    It is suggested that the research proposal (which forms part of the overall application for a research degree) should include the following:
