PhD Studentships in the giCentre

PhD Studentships available

The giCentre is currently looking to expand its range of PhD research students working in the area of information and data visualization. Studentships are available to fund study for three years from October 2011. Successful candidates would join a highly dynamic internationally recognised award winning group of academics and researchers.

PhD studentships, which provide a tax-free living allowance of £15,000 per year, a full fee waiver and a £1,000 conference allowance, are awarded on a competitive basis so we are looking for high calibre candidates who enjoy using graphics and are capable of producing a high quality research proposal as part of their application.

We welcome applications and proposals in any area of applied or theoretical data visualization. We strongly encourage potential candidates to discuss possible research topics with us prior to application. Draft proposals emailed to us by the 14th January 2011 will receive feedback that should help you improve your application by the formal deadline of the 31st January 2011. You can email us at (gicentre@soi.city.ac.uk) to discuss any aspect of your application and research proposal. A high quality research proposal is critical in ensuring a funded studentship. Full details of the application procedure can be found at www.city.ac.uk/studentships.

About us

The giCentre team creates graphics from data in innovative and novel ways that are enabled by recent technologies. We do so to help society manage the data deluge, engage people in dealing with the complexities of data and facilitate analysis. We develop, use and evaluate visualization techniques and visual analysis methods to address issues in a number of contexts and application areas including socio-economic information, open data, cartography, transport, insurance & climate, food, energy, local government & service provision.

Current PhD Students

Some topics investigated by current PhD students in the giCentre team include:

  • Geographic social networks in Flickr. How do we visualize complex social and geographic relationships in a large user-contributed dataset?
  • User-centred design of web-based data visualization. How can we understand complex spatio-temporal datasets through web-based data visualization?
  • Visualization for the masses. What are the design principles and evaluation strategies appropriate public participation in data visualization?
  • Cartography and 3D geovisualization. How can cartographic approaches to symbolization be adapted for effective 3D geovisualization?
  • Geovisual analytics of crowdsourced information. How can we use visualization to evaluate the quality of large user-contributed datasets?
  • Geovisualization in decision making. Can we assess knowledge construction using dynamic visualization?

We welcome applications that complement any of our existing areas of research as well as new approaches to data visualization from bright motivated people wishing to join our successful team.
