Unexpected information visualization refers to a range of scenarios where a user encounters a visualization tool they have never seen before, and needs to quickly understand its interface. Through limiting initial exploration, we propose three visual and animated presentation components intended to aid comprehension within just a few seconds. During this time, the viewing of such a presentation is characterized by purely “observational learning”—the user can grasp the information without any interaction.
